Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

To relate the angular speed of the rear wheel of the bicycle to that of pedals and front sprocket, compare the angular velocity of the rear wheel to that of the front wheel.

The linear speed of the front wheel is given as,

  vF=ωF.RF

Similarly, for the rear wheel,

  vR=ωR.RR

The linear speed of the front wheel is equal to the linear speed of the rear wheel so, equating both the equations,

  ωR.RR=ωF.RF

Separating the similar terms,

  RRRR=ωFωR-------------------1

And given that the NF and NR are the number of teeth on the front wheel to the number of teeth on the rear wheel.

The diameter of the sprocket is d and the circumference of the sprocket

  2πRF=NFd2πRR=NRd

Deriving the above equations

  RRRF=NRNF--------------2

Solving both 1 and 2 equations,

  ωRωF=NFNR

Conclusion:

The ratio of the angular velocity of the rear wheel to the front wheel is ωRωF=NFNR .

Answer to Problem 73GP

  ωRωF=4

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

The teeth on rear sprocket ( NR )= 13

The teeth on front sprocket ( NF )= 52

Formula used:

The relation between the ratios of the angular velocity of the rear wheel to the front wheel and the number of teeth on the rear and front is given as,

  ωRωF=NFNR

Calculation:

Substitute the values of teeth on the front NF , and rear NR ,

  ωRωF=5213ωRωF=4

Conclusion:

The ratio of the angular velocity of the rear sprocket to the front sprocket is 4.

(c)

To determine

To Evaluate: The ratio of ωRωF when front and rear sprockets have 42 and 28 teeth.

Answer to Problem 73GP

  ωRωF=1.5

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

The teeth on r0ear sprocket ( NR )

= 28

The teeth on front sprocket ( NF )

= 42

Formula used:

  ωRωF=NFNR

Calculation:

The relation between the ratios of the angular velocity of the rear wheel to the front wheel and the number of teeth on the rear and front is given as,

  ωRωF=NFNR

Substitute the values of teeth on front NF and rear NR ,

  ωRωF=4228ωRωF=1.5

Conclusion:

The ratio of the angular velocity of the rear sprocket to the front sprocket is 1.5.
