The net torque about the axle of the wheel is 1.4Nm .

Given information:

Assume that a friction torque of 0.40Nm opposes the motion.

  τ=rFsinθ

Here,

  τ is the torque.

  L is the distance.

  θ is the angle.

  F is the force.

Calculation:

Torque is defined as the product of the force and the perpendicular distance between the rotation axis and the point of application of the force,

  τ=rFsinθτ=rF

Here,

F is the force.

  r is the perpendicular distance.

The wheel is acted upon by different forces.

Hence, the force is at an angle 45° to the face of door is 29Nm .

Calculate the torque on the wheel about the axle of the wheel due to three applied forces.

  τ=F×1r2+F2×(r1)F3×(r1)=(18N)(0.24m)+(28N)(0.24m)(35N)(0.12m)=4.32Nm+6.72Nm4.2Nm=1.8Nm

Negative sign indicates that the torque due to the applied forces is in the clock wise direction.

Frictional always opposes the motion of the object. Since, the net torque on the object is ln the clockwise motion, the frictional torque ftorque will be counter clockwise.

Calculate the net torque about the axle of the wheel.

  τnet=τ+ftorque

Substituting the values as shown below,

  τnet=τ+ftorque=1.8Nm+0.40Nmτnet=1.4Nm

Negative sign indicates that the net torque on the wheel is in the clock wise direction.

Therefore, the net torque about the axle of the wheel is 1.4Nm .

Conclusion:

The net torque about the axle of the wheel is 1.4Nm .
