Answer to Problem 18TE
The mass of the tank is more as compared to that of the balloon, so the tank cannot rise.
Explanation of Solution
An object rises in the air only when buoyant force exceeds its weight. A steel tank containing anything which is more than the air it displaces so won’t rise. A helium-filled balloon weighs less than the air, so it is displaced and rises.
A steel tank filled with helium gas does not rise in the air, but a balloon containing the same helium rises easily. This is because of the heavier mass of the tank as compared to that of the balloon. So the gravity on the steel tank is greater than the gravity on the balloon.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the mass of the tank is more as compared to that of the balloon, so the tank cannot rises.
