Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The number of shared electrons and group of atoms which form single, double and triple covalent bonds needs to be determined.
Concept introduction:
In covalent compounds, atoms are bonded with covalent bonds which are formed by equal sharing of electrons. The valence electrons involve in the covalent bond formation and formation of covalent bond provides the octet configuration to the bonded atoms.
Answer to Problem 130A
Type of covalent bond | Number of shared electrons | Group number |
Single | 2 | Group-17 |
Double | 4 | Group-16 |
Triple | 6 | Group-15 |
Explanation of Solution
Since each
Type of covalent bond | Number of shared electrons |
Single | 2 |
Double | 4 |
Triple | 6 |
The atoms which involves in the single, double and triple covalent bonds must have group-15, 16 and 17. As group-17 elements have 7 valence electrons so they need one more electron to get octet therefore they must form single covalent bond whereas group-16 elements have 6 valence electrons and need 2 more electrons to get octet. The group-15 elements have 5 valence electrons and need 3 more electrons to get octet configuration.
Type of covalent bond | Number of shared electrons | Group number |
Single | 2 | Group-17 |
Double | 4 | Group-16 |
Triple | 6 | Group-15 |
Thus,
Type of covalent bond | Number of shared electrons | Group number |
Single | 2 | Group-17 |
Double | 4 | Group-16 |
Triple | 6 | Group-15 |
