Concept explainers
A type of chemical solution is 6% sodium chloride and 21% ammonium hydroxide. The sodium chloride and ammonium hydroxide are therefore in the ratio 6 to 21 or, equivalently, 2 to 7. Chemists made different amounts of the solution. Let S be an unspecified number of grams of sodium chloride, which can vary, and let A be the corresponding number of grams of ammonium hydroxide in this type of chemical solution. Reason about quantities and use math drawings to help you find and explain three different equations that relate S and A (and do not include any other variables).

- Allowing for scrap, a firm produced 1890 pieces. The number produced is 8% more than the number of pieces required for the order. How many pieces does the order call for? Round the answer to the nearest whole piece.arrow_forwardBaling Hay In the first two trips baling hay around a large field, a farmer obtains 123 bales and 112 bales, respectively. Each round gets shorter, so the farmer estimates that the same pattern will continue. Estimate the total number of bales made after the farmer takes another six trips around the field.arrow_forwardThe Turners want to install outdoor carpet around their rectangular pool. The dimensions for the rectangular area formed by the pool and its walkway are 20 ft by 30 ft. The pool is 12 ft by 24 ft. aHow many square feet need to be covered? bApproximately how many square yards does the area in part a represent? cIf the carpet costs 12.95 per square yard, what will be the cost of the carpet?arrow_forward
