Chapter 6, Problem 51QP
Summary Introduction
To calculate: The rate that is legally quoted and the effective annual rate
Introduction:
The annual rate that is earned from the investment or charged for a borrowing is known as an annual percentage rate and it is also represented as APR. Thus, the APR is calculated by multiplying the interest rate per period with the number of months in a year. The effective annual rate is the rate of interest that is expressed as if it were compounded once in a year.

A local finance company quotes a 17 percent interest rate on one-year loans. So, if you borrow $30,000, the interest for the year will be $5,100. Because you must repay a total of $35,100 in one year, the finance company requires you to pay $35,100/12, or $2,925.00, per month over the next 12 months.
a. What rate would legally have to be quoted?
b. What is the effective annual rate?
A local finance company quotes a 14 percent interest rate on one-year loans. So, if you
