Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether the conservation strategies for puma population be focused on Santa Ana mountains, peninsular range or both the regions.

Given:

The data shows the reasons for the mortality in a species of puma (Puma concolor) in two regions of South California (Table 1).

Introduction:

A study was conducted to determine the population of Puma in Santa Ana mountains and Peninsular range of South California. It is a threatened species, which faces danger from habitat destruction and fragmentation and from human conflicts. These factors have led to the isolation of this species and decline in their number, which has ultimately contracted their gene pool size.

Two populations of this species are separated by highways into two regions mentioned above. Santa Ana mountains are better developed in comparison to the Peninsular range, which is basically an agricultural area. The cat species was radio-collared to observe their movement from 2001 to 2013.

What species is targeted for conservation? What are their primary social behaviors (Group size, lifestyle, foraging habits and diet, hierarchies, territorial habits)? Where are they located and what are potential human influences on their habitats? What are the specific conservation strategies proposed in the report? How do they make use of new technologies (like GPS tracking, drone survey etc if applicable)? Do you think the strategies are appropriate given the particular social behaviors of that species? Do the strategies appropriately address the needs of this species as well as local community well-being and the political context?
In this task, you will assume the role of a wildlife biologist that must decide if reintroduction of cougars into the Eastern US is a feasible mitigation strategy for addressing white-tailed deer overpopulation. You will use scientific information from a variety of sources and what you learn in each learning cycle to support or challenge the reintroduction of cougars to the Eastern United States. Your position on the issue should be based on evidence related to the following factors: impact that the deer population is having on ecosystems • social and economic costs of the overpopulation of deer on various stakeholders • the habitat requirements of cougars, the availability of natural resources and carrying capacity of areas where they would be introduced • potential cougar impact on biodiversity, including on populations of coyote and white-tailed deer potential social and economic costs or benefits to stakeholders in areas where cougars are introduced
Regarding the status of the Red-shouldered Hawk in Wisconsin, select the correct statement(s). And select the best overall best answer. WDNR= Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. a. the WDNR listed the species in 1979 as 'threatened' and did so with detailed, specific data on population size, density, and nest site reproduction-and used these data to accurately compare more current data to earlier baseline information b. the WDNR provided to me clear and detailed information that supported the premise that the Red-shouldered Hawk in 1979, was an imperiled species that likely in the near future was likely to become Endangered. c. the Red-shouldered Hawk is currently listed as a Threatened state species d. none of the above
