To describe:
A patient with a reduced renal function takes antacids, which contains aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. In this case, what is the action of the nurse?
Concept introduction:
Antacids are composed of salts such as aluminum, magnesium, sodium, and/or calcium. Antacids neutralize stomach acids and therefore, they are used to treat stomach acid-related diseases such as peptic ulcer, gastric hyperacidity, gastritis, and heartburn. Antacids cannot prevent the over secretion of gastric acid. However, they can neutralize the acid secretion. Mucus acts against the destructive property of HCl. Antacids promote the defensive mechanism of the gastric mucosa and prevent the gastric acid-related disorders.
