Question
Chapter 5, Problem 5RAC
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The skin is composed of two primary tissue layers- the epidermis, and the dermis. The epidermis forms the skin's surface layer containing stratified epithelial squamous tissue. The many cell layers of the epidermis protect it from potential damage due to abrasion on the skin. It also reduces the loss of water from the skin. The epidermis lies in the dermis.

For questions 2–6, match the layer of the epidermis with the correctdescription or function:a. stratum basale d. stratum lucidumb. stratum corneum e. stratum spinosumc. stratum granulosum2. Production of keratin fibers; formation of lamellar bodies; limitedamount of cell division3. Sloughing occurs; 25 or more layers of dead squamous cells4. Production of cells; melanocytes produce and contribute melanin;hemidesmosomes present5. Production of keratohyalin granules; lamellar bodies release lipids;cells die6. Dispersion of keratohyalin around keratin fibers; layer appears transparent; cells dead
DIRECTIONS: Match the letter of the description and/or function to the epidermal layer that defines it.
A. Outermost layer of dead keratinocytes that protect the skin
6. Stratum basale
B. Layer of skin composed of areolar and dense irregular connective tissues
7. Stratum spinosum
C. Layer of keratinocytes that undergo apoptosis via keratinization
8. Stratum granulosum
D. Single layer of active stem cells that undergo somatic cell division
9. Stratum lucidum
E. Layer of skin composed of adipose and areolar connective tissue
10. Stratum corneum
F. Layer of keratinocytes with intermediate filaments to resist tension
G. Layer of clear, flat, dead keratinocytes found only in thick skin
Briefly answer the following questions:1. Cells of the epidermis are derived from stem cells of the stratum basale. Describe how the cells change as they become integrated into the different layers of the epidermis.2. What structures are produced from keratinization of the epidermis?
