The standard enthalpy of formation of O2(g) , (ΔHf, O2(g)ο) is 0kJ/mol .

The combustion reaction of ethanol is,

C2H5OH(l)+O2(g)CO2(g)+H2O(g)

The above reaction is unbalanced.

To balance the number of carbon atoms multiply CO2(g) , with two.

C2H5OH(l)+O2(g)2CO2(g)+H2O(g)

To balance the oxygen atoms multiply O2(g) , with three.

n×ΔHfο(Products)=3mol×(ΔHf, H2O(g)ο)+2mol×(ΔHf, CO2(g)ο) (3)

Substitute the value of ΔHf, H2O(g)ο and ΔHf, CO2(g)ο in equation (3).
