Diversity in a workplace means that the company employs a wide range of people with different characteristics. There are three kinds of diversities that exist in the workplace. These different types are investigated in order to understand how diversity may benefit or hinder organizational outcomes.
1. Surface-level diversity:
It represents characteristics of an individual that are visible, including age, visible disabilities, body size, race, or sex but are not limited to these characteristics only. A gruop of individuals who share these characteristics is known as an identity group.
2. Deep-level diversity:
This diversity includes the characteristics that are non-observable such as attitudes, values, and beliefs of the individuals. An example is religion, which is not observable.
3. Hidden diversity:
It includes the characteristics that are deep-level but may be concealed or revealed at the discretion of individuals who possess them. These hidden characteristics are known as invisible social identities and may include sexual orientation, mixed racial heritage, a hidden disability like mental illness or chronic disease, or socioeconomic status.

The religion of any person is not observable, this is deep level diversity. Some hidden characteristics of an individual like mental illness, sexual orientation and mixed racial heritage are revealed and hidden at the discretion of individuals who possess them.
