To review:
The reasons, which helps to conclude that alertness is decreased after sleep deprivation, based on the reaction-time results.
Given:
The results of likelihood ratio test (LTR) and PLUS tests are given in the Table 1:
Table 1: The accuracy and reaction time of well-rested (RW) and sleep-deprived (SD) subjects.
% Accuracy | RW | SD24 | SD35 | Reaction time (ms) | RW | SD24 | SD35 |
LTR | 95.2 | 86.5* | 85.0* | LTR | 745 | 792* | 769 |
PLUS | 95.0 | 86.6* | 84.3* | PLUS | 698 | 747* | 746* |
Where, sleep-deprived24 (SD24) refers to subjects who were sleep-deprived for 24 hours and SD35 for 35 hours. LTR and PLUS are the two types of tests which were conducted. A * indicates that there is a significant difference.
Introduction:
LTR and PLUS are two types of tests designed to analyze the brain function of SD subjects based on their reaction-time and accuracy. The PLUS test was slightly more complex and required more comprehension and alertness.

- Describe in detail the proposed mechanism of action of the experimental anti-Parkinsonian drug Prosavin.arrow_forwardLong-distance runners (26.2 miles) describe Runner’s High as a feeling of euphoria. It is often described as a feeling of being invincible and individuals claim a lost sense of time while running. Runner’s high is believed to be caused by very small molecules called endocannabinoids released by the brain that affect the way a person feels, moves, and reacts. Based on the information above what you know of interacting systems, which of the following two are correct? A. If the release of endocannabinoid molecules is increased, the runner will not experience the feeling of euphoria and will stop running. B. The muscular system is not affected by the release of endocannabinoids, which are released by the nervous system. C. If the function of the nervous system is compromised and endocannabinoids are not released, the function of the muscular system is affected and prolonged endurance will be jeopardized. D. The release of endocannabinoids at the cellular level plays an indirect…arrow_forwardIn the experiment of the impacts of sedative and hypnotic acivities in MEJP leaves, does the different behavioral models in mice are the independent variables while the amount of dosage is the dependent variables?arrow_forward

- 2) Anesthetic drugs C and D are currently being screened in rats. After an IV bolus injection, the drugs induce anesthetic effects with some notable differences. Drug C causes the rats to fall unconscious within 60 seconds, while drug D takes 5 minutes to induce anesthesia; however, both drugs exhibit a similar duration of effect, with the rats awakening 20-25 minutes after drug administration. a) What factors might explain the differences in onset time between the two drugs? Why do both drugs still have similar durations of effect? b) Which is preferred between the IV and oral routes of administration, even if drug D has a slow 5-minute induction of anesthesia? (Hint: compare their ADME kinetics) c) Hypothetically, if a higher dose of drug C were administered, would you expect the duration of anesthesia to increase proportionally, or would there likely be a ceiling effect? RSTDP provides an explanation for how a reward that occurs a short time after the stimulus (i.e., outside the STDP learning window) can nevertheless cause a change in the synaptic strengths. The activities of two neurons, labelled A and B, are being recorded and are observed to have similar average spiking rates. Both neurons are observed to change their firing rates in response to both a stimulus and a reward. Describe how the timing of the delivery of the reward could be manipulated so that, during the learning period, the activity of neuron A increased but the activity of neuron B decreased.arrow_forwardHow would the dependent variable (heart rate) be affected if the independent variable (binding and activating alpha-2 receptors) increased?
