Chapter 45, Problem 2AC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The advantages and disadvantages of a long tongue of moth which is specialized for pollinating a particular plant.

Introduction:

In pollination, the transfer of pollen “from the male part (anthers) to the female part (stigma) of a flower occurs”. Pollination is very important for plants to reproduce and to spread their species. The insects such as moth play an important part in the process of pollination.

Students have asked these similar questions
About 100 years ago, C. E. Bessey developed the hypothesis of the “ranalean” flower. What are some of the characters of this type of flower? Is the ranalean flower wind pollinated or insect pollinated?
What is the difference between self-pollination and cross-pollination? If pollen is transferred from the stamens of a flower to the stigma of the very same flower, is that cross-pollination or self-pollination? If it is transferredfrom the stamen of one flower to the stigma of another flower on the very same plant? If it is transferred from the stamen of one flower to the stigma of another flower on a different plant, but a plant that is a clone of the first one? Animals do not have pollen, of course, but why is it that most animals never have to worry about the equivalent problem of self-fertilization? Why cannot most animals fertilize themselves?
What is the evolutionary advantage for a flowering plant to be pollinated with pollen from a different individual plant (of the same species)?
