Chapter 43, Problem 1DA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The maximum peak absorption for the receptor that detects near-ultraviolet light in relation to the other photoreceptors.

Introduction: Ultraviolet light (UV light) is a kind of electromagnetic radiation. Its wavelength ranges between 10 nm and 400 nm, which is usually longer than X-rays and shorter than that of visible light.

Explanation of Solution

The wavelength of ultraviolet (UV) light is shorter than the blue light given in the figure. The peak absorption of the ultraviolet light would fall left to the peak absorption (which is, 420 nm) of the blue cone. According to the entire electromagnetic spectrum, the UV’s wavelength is between 10 nm and 400 nm. Therefore, the absorption peak that falls near 400 nm would be considered as the maximum absorption peak for “near-ultraviolet (NUV)”
