Chapter 42.1, Problem 3R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The reproduction in Komodo dragon, the advantage of this type of reproduction, and the significance of the offspring produced, which were all males.

Introduction:

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is one of the largest living lizard, which is found in the islands of Indonesia. They are very large in size and can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Invertebrate animal species undergo asexual reproduction in order to rapidly increase their population as genetic clones of the parent are produced.

Many species can reproduce either asexually or sexually. Explain what you think might be the evolutionary significance of the switch from asexual to sexual reproduction that occurs in some organisms when the environment becomes unfavorable.
You find two closely related species of fly, one (P) of which appears to reproduce parthenogenetically (a form of asexual reproduction) while the other (S) reproduces sexually. In the same location, I find a third kind of insect, a sterile defensive form with enlarged mandibles. Because it is sterile, I conclude this form must be produced by either P or S. Which do you think is most likely the producer of the sterile defensive individuals? Answer:
In at least some animal groups (for example, reptiles) asexual species tend to be over-represented on islands compared to mainlands, because it is easier for them to colonize. Offer two reasonable hypotheses why asexual species might be more likely to colonize islands than sexual species. Briefly describe your reasoning for each.
