Controlled access:
- With controlled access, the devices in the circuit are looking for information from one another. If so, one device in the circuit that controls the circuit and finds which device can send at what time.
- Controlled access has the following techniques,
- Access requests: Any device in the circuit want to transmit it should send a request to the controlling device.
- Polling: The process of sending a reply to the requesting device that gave the permission to transmit.
- Controlled access method allows only one device to send at a time, so it avoids collision on the shared medium.
Contention:
- With contention, the devices in the circuit wait until the circuit is free. If any device finds no other devices are transmitting and it can transmit the data.
- It is used in Ethernet-Local Area Networks (LANs).
- For example, a group of friends are talking to each other and if one person wants to say something, all should wait until he/she finishes talking and then only another speaker should try to talk.
