Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason for the decline in population of insects and birds when the plant mistletoe is available and not available in any forest.

Concept introduction:

In this, a parasitic plant was removed from a forest. Due to the removal of parasitic plant population of insect and birds decreases. Mistletoe is the hemi-parasitic plant which lives on other trees or shrubs. They grow on a wide range of host tree some of these host tree experience the side effect like stunting and loss of branches. Mistletoe plant also has green leaves, these green leaves acts as food for some bacteria.

Some ecologists have dismissed the terms "R" and "K" and have replaced them with the terms "maintenance" and "dispersal." Match the new terms to the old terms and explain how they are accurately used.
Australian researchers removed a parasitic plant called mistletoe froma forest and observed the consequences. During the 3-yearexperiment, over 30% of the insect and bird species disappeared fromthe mistletoe-free forest. Another forest in which no mistletoe wasremoved saw no change in species diversity. What might the biologistsconclude from these data?
An ecologist studying desert plants performed the following experiment. She staked out two identical plots that included a few sagebrush plants and numerous small annual wildflowers. She found the same five wildflower species in similar numbers in both plots. Then she enclosed one of the plots with a fence to keep out kangaroo rats, the most common herbivores in the area. After two years, four species of wildflowers were no longer present in the fenced plot, but one wildflower species had increased dramatically. The unfenced control plot had not changed significantly in species composition. Using the concepts discussed in the chapter, what do you think happened?
