To analyze:
The influence of elevation on the Pika range, to check the hypothesis whether the pika range is shifting to higher elevation due to climate change or not, and the limitations in describing the patterns in nature in comparison with a controlled experiment.
Introduction:
The Pika are closely related to the rabbit, sharing short limbs, a fairly spherical body, a fur coat, and no external tail. However, Pika has shorter, rounded ears. The Himalayan mountains house the large-eared pika, which are generally known to be found at elevations of more than 6,000 meters or about 20,000 ft. The American pika is extremely sensitive to heat. They have poor fecundity and are susceptible to snowfall declines. They also have limited ability to disperse.

CAMPBEL BIOLOGY:CONCEPTS & CONNECTIONS
- A biome is characterized by seasonal rainfall (about 20 to 100 mm) and temperature (about -10 to 35OC). Globally, the biome is found around 30ON latitude, has many tree species that lose their leaves in the winter, some shrubs and grasses, insects, many medium to small-sized mammals, birds, lizards, and some snakes. This best describes a: Group of answer choices A. chaparral (temperate scrubland). B. boreal forest. C. temperate grassland. D. tropical rainforest. E. deciduous temperate forest.arrow_forwardFrom your reading of the short article "Why Fish Need Trees and Trees Need Fish" by Anne Post, how much streamside (riparian) vegetation is marine-derived originating from migrating anadromous Pacific salmon? about 10-15% 000 0. about 25%, but other researchers report as much at 70% about 10%, but other researchers report as much at 25% 45%, but other researchers report as much at 75%arrow_forwarduppose frogs that hide in the grasses on the edge of a lake are less likely to be eaten by fish, and more likely to reproduce, than frogs that swim in the open lake. Hiding and swimming behavior are reliably passed to offspring. Hiding in the grasses exhibited by generations of frogs is an example of a(n): Group of answer choices A. genetic mutation. B. independent variable. C. acclimatization. D. adaptation. E. abiotic factor.arrow_forward

What should be done to reach the public?arrow_forwardWhich of the following is an example of a microclimate affecting an organism's fitness? Select one or more: a. A rat carcass lying in a sunny location, slowing the growth of fungus on it. b. Seasonal rainfalls increasing in frequency, allowing a tree to produce more seeds. X c. Average temperatures increasing across a forest, leading to a reduction in prey for wolves to feed on. X d. A local wind mixing oxygen into the surface of a lake, increasing diatom photosynthesis ratesarrow_forward
- Following the Industrial Revolution, populations of dark peppered moths increased, while light peppered moths decreased in London. Higher emissions of industrial pollutants caused tree bark to become coated with soot over time, making the darker-colored moths less visible to avian predators. Ecologists studied the moths present on the bark of trees and noted their body colors over a period of 150 years, and the results are shown in the graph below. Based on the information shown in the graph, which statement best explains the changes in moth populations following industrialization?" 100 80 60 Preindustrial 40 20 1800 1850 1900 1950 Postindustrial Year Within the overall moth population in London, dark-colored moth numbers decreased while light-colored moth numbers increased. Select all that apply: a. changes in other aspects of climate, such as precipitation or sea level, are a response to the temperature change b. there is a long-term global database for temperature c. temperature has been measured directly for millennia d. global temperature measurements include weather variabilityarrow_forwardMany factors that impact the effectiveness of protected areas are based upon the edge effect, Island Biogeography Theory or metapopulations. - In any scientific paper, the Discussion is often the most hard-hitting, and where researchers elaborate and explain their results in the context of their experiment and the real world. Explain why when researchers tried culling some of the elk herd it did not have trophic effects, while reintroducing wolves did have trophic effects.arrow_forwardSea otters play an important role in maintaining the kelp forests of the Pacific coast. Otters maintain the sea urchin population, preventing the sea urchins from overgrazing the kelp beds. If the kelp beds are overgrazed, a multitude of other species will decline as a result. Identify the chain of events that could occur if the sea otter population were reduced along the Pacific coast.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is NOT true about climate change? a. Today’s climatic warming particularly the warming since the mid-20th century is occurring much faster than ever before and cannot be explained by natural causes alone. b. Humans more specifically, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions we generate are the leading cause of the earth’s rapidly changing climate. c. The burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas for electricity, heat, and transportation is the primary source of natural cause of climate change. d. Activities like agriculture and road construction can change the reflectivity of the earth’s surface, leading to local warming or cooling, too.arrow_forward
