Chapter 36, Problem 11A

If a current-carrying wire is bent into a loop, why is the magnetic field stronger inside the loop than outside?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

To Explain: There is a stronger magnetic field inside the loop than outside.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The magnetic field which is produced by the current carrying loop is always perpendicular to the direction of the current flow. The magnetic field is absent if no current flows inside any loop.

A wire that carries current when bent into a loop, has stronger magnetic field inside the loop as compared to the outside because inside the loop magnetic field lines are collected up. So, due to this collection of field lines or magnetic field, a strong magnetic field is setup inside it as compared to the outside of the loop.

Conclusion:

The magnetic field are stronger inside the loop as compared to the outside of the loop because magnetic field lines are collected up there.
