Answer to Problem 15Q

Solution:

We cannot ‘see’ a black hole because light cannot escape it, but we can note the effect as a black hole. The most obvious way to detect a black hole is through its strong gravitational pull. If a black hole was surrounded by large amounts of orbiting material like gas, dust and stars, their rapid motion close to the hole could be observable via shifts in the energy of the radiation they emit. If gas from a nearby star was sucked into a black hole, the intense gravitational energy would heat the gas to millions of degrees, with the resulting X-ray emissions pointing to the presence of the hole.

Explanation of Solution

A place where the gravitational force is present, which does not even allow radiation to escape is called a hole.
