To review:
A trait out of endothermic, feathers, and hair that was most likely to get convergent evolved in at least two lineages, the functional relationship among these traits and the reason, which make the paleontologists conclude about the endothermic nature of many extinct theropods.
Introduction:
Endothermy is the ability of an organism to maintain its body temperature irrespective of the temperature of the surroundings. Most of the vertebrates like mammals and birds are endotherms. The animals that are not able to maintain their body temperature are called as the ectotherms, like reptiles and amphibians. Body heat is maintained with the help of an insulation cover that prevents the body heat from getting escaped to the outer environment.

Life: The Science of Biology
- How are the Protochordates the link between the invertebrates and the vertebrates? Discuss its traditional and recent phylogeny.arrow_forwardSegmentation has evolved several times and occurs in most animal supergroups. What advantages do segmented taxa have over their unsegmented relatives?arrow_forward2) Identify the synapomorphies that unite the non-bilaterian phyla, as well as the protostome phyla, and the deuterostome phyla 3) Characterize each phylum of non-bilaterian and protostome phyla with their synapomorphies and differencesarrow_forward
- Which of the following are the defining features of animals that belong to the phylum chordata? (bubble all 4 that apply) Dorsal hollow nerve chord O Spinal column Muscular post anal tail Pharyngeal slits/pouches O Lung tissue Four chambered heart O Notochordarrow_forwardLateral undulation is a type of locomotion used by many basal Chordates, but it is used by derived Chordates too. Choose all the clades that have taxa that use lateral undulation. O Crocodylia Mammalia Aves O Lepidosauria O Actinopterygii O Amphibiaarrow_forwardA new group of echinoderms, the sea daisies, or concentricycloids, wasdiscovered in 1986. They are deep-water animals living on sunken wood. They are flat and round, looking very much like a small sea star withoutarms. They also lack a gut. Without ever having seen them, why do youthink they were classified as echinoderms, not as members of a new phylum? Do you have any hypotheses as to how they feed or move around?arrow_forward
- Which of the following is a characteristic of the Phylum Echinodermata? O Organisms in the phylum Echinodermata are made of cells, not tissue. Organisms in the phylum Echinodermata exhibit five-part morphological symmetry. Organisms in the phylum Echinodermata are thought to be the first to develop nerves and muscles. O Organisms in the phylum Echinodermata exhibit multiple life stages.arrow_forwardWhat are examples of the following groups of vertebrates: Chondrichthyes, Actinopterygii, Actinistia, Dipnoi, and Tetrapoda? How many species are in each of the above groups? Which one has the most species? When did the first vertebrates appear, and when did they first live on land? Where do we find the earliest fossils of vertebrates, and where do we find the earliest fossils of terrestrial (land-living) vertebrates? What are the following and how are they related to humans: Pongo, Gorilla, Pan, Sahelanthropus, Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, Homo erectus, and Homo neanderthalensis? Which of these is our closest living relative? What are some of the traits that these organisms share with us? When and where did each of the extinct forms above live? What does this tell us about when our lineage split from the most recent ancestor we share with our closest living relative?arrow_forwardFill in the blanks w/ synapomorphic, symplesiomorphic, or neither: The presence of brain regionalization is a __ feature of tetrapods relative to conditions in other vertebrates, but is a __ feature of Chordata considered alone. The presence of a post-anal tail, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, a notochord, and external gills are __ features of Chordata, __ features of Urochordates, __ features of (cephalochordates + vertebrates) relative to conditions in other organisms.arrow_forward
- 1) describe the four distinguishing characteristics of chordata a d the structural, functional, and reproductive adaptations throughtout the group 2) discuss the evolutionary history of hominins and homo sapiens, relating our species to other ales other primates and other mammalsarrow_forwardTiktaalik and Protarchaeopteryx are examples of transitional forms. In paleontology, what does transitional form mean?arrow_forwardDescribe the origin of tetrapods and identify some of their keys derived traitsarrow_forward
