Concept explainers
Quality of water is a very important factor which helps to ensure public health. Contaminated water is the source of various types of waterborne diseases. Various types of waterborne illness occur due to untreated or poorly treated water which is used for drinking or food preparation purposes.
Explanation of Solution
The two major classes of water include potable water and recreational water. Water which is suitable for the consumption of human beings is referred to as potable water. Filtration and chlorination process are the two important processes which are carried out in potable water to make it safe for consumption. Recreational water includes aquatic freshwater systems such as a stream, lakes, ponds, as well as public wading and swimming pools. This recreational source of water acts as a major cause of waterborne illness and causes more disease outbreaks as compared to drinking water.
Surface water can be made safe for drinking purposes through the process of filtration and chlorination. Both these process make the surface of recreational water just like of potable water.

- تشمل ملوثات المياه: Water pollutants includes.. A) Pathogens, Greenhouse gases, Heavy metals B) Pathogens, Greenhouse gases, Chemicals C) Pathogens, Chemicals, Heavy metals D) Pathogens, Greenhouse gases, Organic matterarrow_forwardSewage works use microbes in many ways to break down organic matter. Which of the following processes is NOT carried out? Pathogenic bacteria and viruses are added to the input sewage as a tracer and to ensure the processes have all worked well Bacteria and archaea are used in sludge digesters to breakdown organic matter anaerobically Bacterial trickle filter beds have a wide variety of microbes to break down organic matter Activated sludge selects for Gram negative bacteria that break down wastearrow_forwarda) Define 'Disinfection' and 'Sterilization' OR differentiate between them. b) Enlist the different methods of 'Disinfection' which method would you recommend for 'Municipal Water Supply' and WHY? Depending on the availability of 'Source of Water which 'Source' is more important than the other for disinfection and WHY? Give reason. c) of them is stronger than the other and by what percentage? Define or differentiate between “Free Available Chlorine" and “Combined Available Chlorine". Write their Chemical Formulae and mention which one d) Define “Break Point Chlorination". With the help of a neat Figure' show the "Break Point" and also show "Combined Available Chlorine", "Free Available Chlorine" and "Total Available Chlorine". Mention the “Dosage" in order to obtain a “Free Available Chlorine Residual" of about 0.5 mg/l or above. e) Define the term “Chlorine Demand" of water. What are the "Factors" OR enlist the "Factors" that show the "Effectiveness of Chlorine".arrow_forward
- The party primarily at fault for the water crisis in Flint, Michigan was the governmental agencies. The two main government agencies at fault are the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency, they failed to properly monitor and respond to the major issues that came up involving the water quality, despite receiving very early evidence of there being contamination (Sullivan, 2017). Although others, including city officials and water treatment personnel, share some blame, it was the systemic failures within governmental bodies that allowed the crisis to escalate. Regaining public trust after a significant blow requires transparency, accountability, and meaningful action. Being transparent with the public involves providing accurate information, and letting the public be fully aware of the inter-workings of governmental agency actions. Being accountable involves acknowledging past mistakes, such as putting out a statement admitting fault to how…arrow_forwardName the various communicable diseases spread by way of polluted water.arrow_forwardWhich of the following are properties of good indicator organisms for water quality? Select all correct answers. not found in the presence of pathogens. better survival rates than pathogens. present whenever pathogens are present in water. capable of reproduction in contaminated waters. incapable of reproduction in contaminated waters. absent in uncontaminated water present in uncontaminated water (endemic) worse survival rates than pathogens.arrow_forward
