Concept explainers
A whale’s eye uses hydraulics to move the lens of its eye closer or farther from the retina. When a whale dives after having had a look around in the air, in which direction should the lens be moved?
To state the device in which fuels are burnt inside chambers called cylinders.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A device which converts thermal energy into mechanical energy utilising some chemical energy in it is called a heat engine. An example of this engine is car’s engine.
All heat engines contain two types of combustion engines (either of the two), called internal combustion engine and external combustion engine which burns fuel either inside or outside a set of cylinders. A combustion engine which burns fuels inside a set of cylinders is called internal combustion engine and the combustion engine which burns fuel outside a set of cylinders is called external combustion engine. Internal combustion engines are used in all modern day automobiles and diesel engines while external combustion engine was used in old fashioned steam engines. Internal combustion engines are considered better than the external ones as they have a higher thermal efficiency and consume a little fuel.
Conclusion:
Hence, the device in which fuels are burnt inside chambers called cylinders are called internal combustion engine.
