Chapter 30, Problem 1RQ

Why do we have moderate temperatures on lands bordering the oceans?

Expert Solution & Answer

To determine

The reason of moderate temperatures on lands bordering the oceans.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

The reason of moderate temperatures on lands bordering the oceans is because of high specific heat capacity of water.

Explanation of Solution

The oceans are the large reservoirs, from which water evaporates into the atmosphere. This later precipitate as rain and snow. So, the oceans perform an essential role in moderating the temperature of Earth’s atmosphere. Water takes more time to heat up or to cool down because of its high specific heat capacity.

So, a huge amount of heat energy is transferred to surrounding when the water cools. Likewise, a large amount of heat energy is absorbed when water heats up. This is the reason because of which lands near the oceans have a moderate temperature.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the reason of moderate temperatures on lands bordering the oceans is because of high specific heat capacity of water.
