Concept explainers
To distinguish:
Between the eutrophic and oligotrophic lakes.
Introduction:
The freshwater lakes are formed when natural depressions get filled with water. In temperate climates, large lakes possess distinct zones of life. In aquatic ecosystems, the nutrients tend to be concentrated at the bottom as sediments. Thus, in these areas, the level of a nutrient is high and the level of sunlight is low. The freshwater lakes are classified on the basis of nutrient content.
To describe:
A human-made scenario and a natural scenario under which there will be the conversion of the oligotrophic lake into the eutrophic lake.
Introduction:
The freshwater lakes are classified into two categories; oligotrophic and eutrophic. Oligotrophic word refers to ‘poorly fed’ and eutrophic refers to ‘well-fed’.

The concentration of mercury is 10 times higher in the tertiary consumer fish species compared to the amount in the primary consumer fish species.
