In abnormal cold winters, the Black Sea may sometimes freeze whereas the Adriatic Sea does not freeze. The Black Sea has a low salinity of about 18 psu. The Adriatic Sea has salinity much greater than Black Sea. It usually varies between 38–39 psu in the south to 33–25 psu in the north.
