Chapter 27.6, Problem 2MC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The data that led the researchers conclude that whales cannot taste umami, sweet, bitter, or sour.

Concept introduction:

The taste genes of the whale are present in the cell membrane of the taste receptors cells. These cells contain the protein which is encoded by the taste genes. There are two types of taste genes present in the whales that are T1R (taste receptor type 1) an T2R (taste receptor type 2). The T1R encode for the umami, and sweet taste receptors, and T2R encodes for the bitter taste receptor.

If you can taste only five things (salt, bitter, sweet, sour, umami), why do the many foods you eat all seem so distinct?
Distinguish between static and dynamic equilibrium. The sense of equilibrium (balance) is really two senses— static equilibrium and dynamic equilibrium—that come from different sensory organs. The organs of static equilibrium (stat′ik e″kwı˘-lib′re-um) sense the position of the head, maintaining balance, stability and posture when the head and body are still. When the head and body suddenly move or rotate, the organs of dynamic equilibrium (di-nam′ik e″kwı˘- lib′re-um) detect such motion and aid in maintaining balance.
When we look at HEAD lice, we see (a) Lice from light and dark birds on feathers of light and dark birds (b) Mean luminosity of body and head lice from light and dark birds Luminosity score (mean ± std error) 225 200 O Lice from light birds Lice from dark birds - VS. Body lice (N = 16) p < 0.05 Head lice (N = 10) lower luminosity on light colored birds and higher luminosity on dark colored birds higher luminosity on light colored birds and lower luminosity on colored birds no differences in the luminosity between the two species on the two different birds
