Concept explainers
To write: the defense adaptation by two groups of chordates.
Introduction: The two groups of chordates consist of Urochordata and Cephalochordata. Tunicates are the members of Urochordata whereas lancelets are the members of Cephalochordata. Both Tunicates and lancelets defend themselves with some adaptations.
Explanation of Solution
In reality, Tunicates is wearing tunics. The leathery pocket-known as tunic-is secreted, shielding the animal. Two openings in the sac are present in the tunicates. Tunics have some chemicals in their body which also protect them as those chemicals are of bad taste that saves them from predators.
Lancelets are fish-like and can swim effortlessly, but they spend most of their time under the sand. Lancelets travel easily along with the soil, and their specialized locomotive system has effectively evolved to escape from predators
Thus, this kind of defense adaptation measures is taken by the two groups of chordates.
