Concept explainers
If the speed of sound depended on its frequency, would you enjoy a concert sitting in the second balcony?
To check the effect of distance on musical sound, if the speed of the sound depends on its frequency.
Answer to Problem 31A
If the speed of the sound depends on its frequency then it would be a very unpleasant experience listening to the music from the second balcony.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: The speed of the sound does not depend on its frequency.
If the speed of the sound depends on its frequency then different frequencies generated in a concert will reach the audience sitting in the second balcony at a different time. This would result in a jumbled sound than the actual music played and it will be a very unpleasant experience for the audience.
However, this is not true in the actual case which means that a person sitting in the balcony will enjoy the concert equivalent to another person sitting in front of the stage.
Conclusion: If sound’s speed changes with the frequency then for an audience sitting at a distant place, the second balcony in this particular case, would not have enjoyed the concert.
