Both the epithelium of the vagina and the cervical glands of the uterus help prevent the invasion and spread of vaginal pathogens. Explain how each of these mechanisms works.
Mumps is a viral infection. The primary symptom of mumps is visible swelling of the parotid gland on either side of the face. However, the virus can also infiltrate the male reproductive system, causing the testes to atrophy. Some effects include oligospermia (low sperm count), azoospermia (no sperm in semen), and asthenospermia (reduced sperm movement).
Explain why each of the following effects of this virus reduces the efficacy of the male reproductive system to fertilize an ovum.
No sperm in semen
Low sperm count
Reduced sperm movement

Research treatment options for reduced sperm movement. Describe one option that can be used to aid successful fertilization and explain why it helps.

The person with the testes then produces antibodies against their own sperm. This has consequences for the effectiveness of a vasectomy reversal. In the situation described above, why are the spermatozoa considered foreign even though they are being produced within the person’s own seminiferous tubules? This immune response is not normal, and so describe how the testes’ structure prevents this immune reaction from occurring.arrow_forwardMumps is a viral infection.
