a) The resistance of a coil aluminum wire at 21°C is 2102. The temperature of the
wire is increased and the resistance rises to 2402. If the coefficient of resistance
of aluminum is 0 .0039/ºC at 21°C, determine the temperature to which the coil
has risen.
b) A coil consist of 2000 turns of copper wire having a cross sectional area of
0.8mm?. The mean length per turn is 80 cm and the resistivity of copper is 0.02µ2-
m. Find the resistance of the coil and power absorbed by the coil when connected
across 110V D.C supply.
c) A new manufacturing piant which operates on parameters such as temperature
and pressure, has been procured by your company. In the operational manual is
stated “if one or more than one parameter exceeds the safe value, a protective
measure is needed to be done". As an engineer, design a schematic diagram using
an OR gate to detect the exceed parameter and explain how it will produce a
command signal for the system to take the required action.
The copper windings of a motor have a resistance of 46 Ω at 20oC when the motor is idle. After the motor has run for several hours, the resistance rises to 59 Ω. What is the temperature in Celsius of the windings now? Ignore changes in the dimensions of the windings. The temperature coefficient of resistivity for copper is 4.3 × 10-3 K-1.
Problem 3: Copper has a resistivity of pc = 1.72 x 10-8 2 m. An extension cord made of copper is connected to
a DC electric motor which requires a current of at least Imin = 7.5 A in order to operate. The cord is connected
to a V = 199 V source.

- Review. When a straight wire is warmed, its resistance is given by R = R0,[1 + a(T T0)] according to Equation 27.20, where a is the temperature coefficient of resistivity. This expression needs to be modified if we include the change in dimensions of the wire due to thermal expansion.
