Chapter 25, Problem 4CQ
BIO Polarization and the Ground Spider The ground spider Drassodes cupreus like many spiders, has several pairs of eyes. It has been discovered that one of these pairs of eyes acts as a set of polarization filters with one eye's polarization direction oriented at 90° to the other eye’s polarization direction. In addition, experiments show that the spider uses these eyes to aid in navigating to and from its burrow. Explain how such eyes might aid navigation.

The first filter has its transmission axis parallel to the z direction, the second has its transmission axis at an angle of 30.0 from the z direction, and the third has its transmission axis at an angle of 60.0 from the z direction. If the light that emerges from the third filter has an intensity of 250.0 W/m2, what is the original intensity of the light?arrow_forward
- A spherical interplanetary grain of dust of radius 0.2 m is at a distance r1 from the Sun. The gravitational force exerted by the Sun on the grain just balances the force due to radiation pressure from the Sun's light. (i) Assume the grain is moved to a distance 2r1 from the Sun and released. At this location, what is the net force exerted on the grain? (a) toward the Sun (b) away from the Sun (c) zero (d) impossible to determine without knowing the mass of the grain (ii) Now assume the grain is moved back to its original location at r1, compressed so that it crystallizes into a sphere with significantly higher density, and then released. In this situation, what is the net force exerted on the grain? Choose from the same possibilities as in part (i).arrow_forwardUnpolarized light passes through two Polaroid sheets. Two polarizing sheets of plastic are placed in front of the lens with their axes at an angle of 20.0°. Assuming the sunlight is unpolarized and the polarizers are 100% efficient, what is the initial rate of heating of the water in °C/s, assuming it is 80.0% absorbed? Fluorescent tubes framing the mirror carry a clockwise electric current. (i) What is the direction of the magnetic field created by that current at the center of the mirror? (a) left (b) right (c) horizontally toward you (d) horizontally away from you (e) no direction because the field has zero magnitude (ii) What is the direction of the field the current creates at a point on the wall outside the frame to the right?
