BIO Optical Activity of Sugar The sugar concentration in a solution (e.g., in a urine specimen) can be measured conveniently by using the optical activity of sugar and other asymmetric molecules In general, an optically active molecule, like sugar, will rotate the plane of polarization through an angle that is proportional to the thickness of the sample and to the concentration of the molecule To measure the concentration of a given solution, a sample of known thickness is placed between two polarizing filters that are at right angles to each other, as shown in Figure 25-49. The intensity of light transmitted through the two filters can be compared with a calibration chart to determine the concentration (a) What percentage of the incident (unpolarized) light will pass through the first filter? (b) If no sample is present, what percentage of the initial light will pass through the second filter? (c) When a particular sample is placed between the two filters, the intensity of light emerging from the second filter is 40 0% of the incident intensity. Through what angle did the sample rotate the plane of polarization? (d) A second sample has half the sugar concentration of the first sample Find the intensity of light emerging from the second filter in this case.

- Laser vision correction often uses an excimer laser that produces 193-nm electromagnetic radiation. This wavelength is extremer strongly absorbed by the cornea and athletes it in a manner that reshapes the cornea to correct vision detects. Explain how the strong absorption helps concentrate the energy in a thin layer and thus give greater accuracy in shaping the cornea. Also explain how this strong absorption limits damage to the lens and retina of the eye.arrow_forwardYou use a sequence of ideal polarizing niters, each with its axis making the same angle with the axis of the previous filter, to rotate the plane of' polarization of a polarized light beam by a total of 45.0. You wish to have an intensity reduction no larger than 10.0%. (a) How many polarizers do you need to achieve your goal? (b) What is the angle between adjacent polarizers?arrow_forwardConstruct Your Own Problem Consider a space sail such as mentioned in Example 29.5 Construct a problem in which you calculate the light pressure on the sail in N/m2 produced by reflecting sunlight. Also calculate the force that could be produced and how much effect that would have on a spacecraft. Among the things to be considered are the intensity of sunlight, its average wavelength, the number of photons per square meter this implies, the area of the space sail, and the mass of the system being accelerated.arrow_forward
- Polarized light is incident on 10 polarizing sheets the access of the first polarize she makes an angle theta with the plane of polarization each subsequent Sheet has an axis that is rotated by an angle theta from that of adjacent sheets find theta if 29% of the incident intensity is transmitted by the sheets. Suppose you want to rotate the plan of polarization of a beam of a polarize light by 90° but you do not want the Final intensity to be less than 66% of the initial intensity what is the minimum number of polarizing sheets you must use? Assume that if she is rotated the same angle relative to the adjacent sheetsarrow_forwardFlying Circus of Physics At a beach the light is generally partially polarized due to reflections off sand and water. At a particular beach on a particular day near sundown, the horizontal component of the electric field vector is 2.1 times the vertical component. A standing sunbather puts on polarizing sunglasses; the glasses eliminate the horizontal field component. (a) What fraction of the light intensity received before the glasses were put on now reaches the sunbather's eyes? (b) The sunbather, still wearing the glasses, lies on his side. What fraction of the light intensity received before the glasses were put on now reaches his eyes? The second polarizer is rotated clockwise through a 30* angle with respect to the first, and the third is rotated clockwise through a 60" angle with respect to the second. (a) What is the intensity and polarization of unpolarized light that passes through all three polarizers if the initial intensity is I,? - Lasers that we use in our laboratory emit large amounts of intensity suppose you are operating the laser and note that the average intensity of the light it 8.97x10^9 W/m^2 find the rms value of the electric and magnetic field emitted by the laserarrow_forwardAbsorption of Light A spectrophotometer measures the con- centration of a sample dissolved in water by shining a light through it and recording the amount of light that emerges. In other words, if we know the amount of light that is absorbed, we can calculate the concentration of the sample. For a certain substance the concentration (in moles per liter, mol/L) is found by using the formula C = -2500 In where I, is the intensity of the incident light and I is the intensity of light that emerges. Find the concentration of the substance if the intensity I is 70% of Io- 10arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true about polarization? Mark all that apply. The angle between the polarizing directions of the sheets is 450 for the intensity of the transmitted light to the incident intensity. Determine the amount of the intensity of the transmitted light to the incident intensity. O A. Half the incident intensity B. One third the incident intensity. Oc. One fourth the incident intensity D. Two third the incident intensity. E. One fifth the incident intensityarrow_forwardThis question is not part of an exam it is a normal homework question Investigators measure the size of fog droplets using the diffraction of light. A camera records the diffraction pattern on a screen as the droplets pass in front of a laser, and a measurement of the size of the central maximum gives the droplet size. In one test, a 690 nmnm laser creates a pattern on a screen 30 cmcm from the droplets. If the central maximum of the pattern is 0.30 cmcm in diameter, how large is the droplet?
