Summary Introduction

To determine:

The functions of the respiratory system in addition to gas exchange.

Introduction:

The respiratory system obtains oxygen from the atmosphere, by the process of respiration. The gaseous exchange occurs in the lungs in which the oxygen is inhaled, and carbon dioxide is exhaled. There are various parts of the respiratory system, such as the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.

Explanation of Solution

The function of the respiratory system are as follows:

Gas exchange:

Oxygen enters the blood, and carbon dioxide leaves.

Regulation of blood pH:

pH is regulated by changing the blood carbon dioxide levels.

Voice production:

Movement of air past vocal folds make sound and speech.

Olfaction:

The smell is observed when airborne molecules enter the nasal cavity.

Protection:

It protects against the microorganisms by preventing their entry.
