Introduction:

Tongue movements, mastication and the initial actions of swallowing employ skeletal muscles innervated by somatic motor fibers from six of the cranial nerves (V, VII and IX-XII) and from the ansa cervicalis. The salivary glands are innervated by sympathetic fibers from the superior cervical ganglion and parasympathetic fibers from cranial nerves VII and IX.
