To determine:
The difference between an oncogenes and a tumor-suppressor gene.
Introduction:
Normal maintenance and growth of body tissues depends on the balance between the signals that inhibit and promote the cell division. When there is unbalanced state the condition may lead to cancer. Thus, cancer is usually caused by mutations that affect the gene indirectly or directly leading to unbalanced state.
To determine:
Some examples of the functions of proto-oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes in normal cells.
Introduction:
Proto-oncogenes are normal genes that encode for proteins required for the promotion of cell cycle. Tumor suppressor gene codes for protein that directly or indirectly stops the cell cycle and promote the process of apoptosis. This prevents the cells from dividing “uncontrollably”.
