To use : synthetic division to divide

Answer to Problem 33E
(x3−3x2+5)÷(x−4)=x2+x+4+21x−4
Explanation of Solution
Given information : (x3−3x2+5)÷(x−4)
Concept Involved:
For long division of polynomials by divisors of the form x - k, there is a shortcut
called synthetic division. The pattern for synthetic division of a cubic polynomial is
summarized below. (The pattern for higher-degree polynomials is similar.)
Synthetic Division (for a Cubic Polynomial): To divide ax3 + bx2 + cx + d by x−k , use this pattern.
k|Coefficient of dividend︷ abcd↓ka↓↓↓_ ↗↗↗ a ︸Coefficient of quotient r←Remainder | In case when we have a polynomial with a missing term, insert placeholders with zero coefficients for missing powers of the variable. Vertical pattern: Add terms in columns Diagonal pattern: Multiply results by k. This algorithm for synthetic division works only for divisors of the form x - k. Remember that x+k =x−(−k). |
The Division Algorithm : If f(x) and d(x) are polynomials such that d(x)≠0 , and the degree of d(x) isless than or equal to the degree of f(x) , then there exist unique polynomials q(x) and r(x) such that f (x)↑Dividend = d(x)↑Divisor⋅q(x)↑Quotient + r (x)↑Remainder where r(x)=0 or the degree of r(x) is less than the degree of d(x) . If theremainder r(x) is zero, then d(x) divides evenly into f(x) .
Calculation:
Set up the synthetic division to divide (x3−3x2+5)÷(x−4) .
When you set this up using synthetic division write 4 for the divisor x−4 . Then write the coefficients of the dividend to the right, across the top. Include any 0's that were inserted in for missing terms. In this polynomial there is no missing zeros. Write the terms of the dividend and divisor in descending powers of the variable.
4|Coefficient of dividend︷ 1−305 _
Bring down the leading coefficient to the bottom row.
4| 1−305↓_ 1
Multiply 4 by the value just written on the bottom row. Place this value right beneath the next coefficient in the dividend:
4↘ | 1−3054_ 1↗
Add the column created and write the sum in the bottom row:
4| 1 −3 4↓ 0 5_ 1 1
Repeat until done. Multiply 4 by the value just written on the bottom row. Place this value right beneath the next coefficient in the dividend:
4↘ | 1−305 44_ 1 1↗
Add the column created and write the sum in the bottom row:
4| 1 −3 4 0 4↓ 5_ 1 1 4
Repeat until done. Multiply 4 by the value just written on the bottom row. Place this value right beneath the next coefficient in the dividend
4↘ | 1−305 4416_ 1 1 4↗
Add the column created and write the sum in the bottom row:
4↘ | 1−305 4416_ 1 1 4 21
Write out the answer. The numbers in the last row make up your coefficients of the quotient as well as the remainder. The final value on the right is the remainder. Working right to left, the next number is your constant, the next is the coefficient for x , the next is the coefficient for x squared, and so on.
(x3−3x2+5)÷(x−4)=x2+x+4+21x−4
Conclusion:
By dividing the given polynomial x3−3x2+5 by x−4 using the synthetic division we get the quotient as x2+x+4 and the remainder as 21 .

- Assuming that the rate of change of the price P of a certain commodity is proportional to the difference between demand D and supply S at any time t, the differential equations describing the price fluctuations with respect to time can be expressed as: dP/dt = k(D - s) where k is the proportionality constant whose value depends on the specific commodity.
