Concept explainers
A 12-year-old girl will die from leukemia if she does not get a bone marrow transplant, but a matching donor cannot be found. A newborn’s umbilical cord contains blood-forming stem cells, which can be harvested after birth and donated. The girl’s parents decide to have another child in a final attempt to provide their daughter with a matching donor. Doctors report that having a “savior sibling” is not uncommon. In your opinion, is it acceptable to have a child in order to save another child’s life? Why or why not?

- If you were in a major accident and needed a large blood transfusion, why is type AB the best to have, in terms of being able to accept the widest range of donated cells?arrow_forwardYou find your vegan neighbor with her one-year-old daughter at the hospital where you are training as a medical student. She tells you that her daughter is not doing well after switching from breast milk to a solid diet, and has started to grow pale and is sleeping all the time. You find that her height and weight are way below normal. A blood test reveals the hyper segmentation of neutrophil cells, an indicator of bone marrow malfunction. You deduce that she has pernicious anemia, and refer her to an experienced doctor. Explain the development of anemia in this case, and propose a long term treatmentarrow_forwarda.) what a bone marrow transplant is and how it is done b.) what stem cells are.arrow_forward
- A couple is concerned their child will be born with sickle cell anemia. The woman does not have sickle cell anemia. The woman’s mother had sickle cell anemia and her father was a carrier of the sickle cell gene. The man knows that he is a carrier of the sickle cell gene. What is the probability that the child will have sickle cell anemia?arrow_forwardWhat is the difference between autologous vs. allogeneic stem cell transplants?arrow_forwardHow should we choose who gets a transplant, supposing that there are not enough organs for all who need them?arrow_forward
- Imagine you are a surgeon. Five patients in the hospital are in urgent need of different organ transplants to survive. One of them needs a heart, one a lung, one a liver, and the other two each a kidney. All five happen to have the same rare blood type, so it is hard to find the right donor. At this time, a foreign traveler came to the hospital for a simple body check. By chance, he has the same rare blood type as theirs. With your expertise, as long as you use some simple medication to end the life of the traveler painlessly and without the notice of others, then his organs can save the five people awaiting organ transplants What would you do? Would you kill one person to save five people?arrow_forwardJonah and Jana are siblings. Jonah has the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis, caused by inheriting one copy from each parent of a mutation in the CF gene. Jana does not have cystic fibrosis. Which of the following statements is/are true? (Select all that are true) a)Jana does not have the gene that when mutant causes cystic fibrosis. b)Jana has the gene that when mutant causes cystic fibrosis. c)Jana has two copies of the allele that causes cystic fibrosis. d)Jana does not have two copies of the allele that causes cystic fibrosis.arrow_forwardOrgan A Organ B Figure 2 i) Identify organs A and B in Figure 2 above. ii) Give a reason for your choice of answer in e (i) above. iii) State the name of the tissue that is specialized for translocation. Explain how it is adapted to carry out its function.arrow_forward
- Nowadays, diabetes is a common disease. Diagram with labels, how can stem cell therapy be used to treat the disease?arrow_forwardApart from suffering from recurrent and prolonged infections, Marie Curie experienced the following signs and symptoms: fatigue, rapid heart rate, pale skin, easy bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts, and dizziness. Bone marrow transplant was not an option at that time and so blood transfusion was the treatment of choice. Please explain the reasoning behind these other signs and symptoms that Curie experienced? Thank you!arrow_forwardWhy are stem cells not more abundant in the human body? I learned that stem cells can proliferate into any kind of cell in the body. These cells can be very beneficial for repairing damaged tissues and replacing dead tissue. So, if stem cells have so many uses and benefits why are they not more abundant in the human body? What are the benefits and risks of an increase of stem cells? Do the benefits outweigh the possible problems? Is an increase in stem cell numbers only worth while when an injury has occurred such as in stem cell therapy? Thank youarrow_forward
