Concept introduction:

Enzymes such as glutaminase and glutamine synthetase are involved in the metabolism of the amino acid, glutamine. Glutamine synthetase principally produces glutamine, the amino acid present in the circulatory system. It carries ammonia from peripheral tissues to the kidneys, where the nitrogen of the amide group is hydrolyzed by glutaminase. During this step, glutamate and NH4+ are generated, which are excreted through urine. Thus, the activity of glutamine synthetase is the highest in the stomach whereas that of glutaminase is the highest in the small intestines.
