Concept introduction:
Pertussis disease is caused by microorganism Bordetella pertussis which is a gram-negative coccobacillus bacterium. It has filamentous hemagglutinin on its surface which helps in adhering it to the surface of epithelial cells. It secretes pertussis cytotoxic and a tracheal cytotoxin. The layer of ciliated epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract is damaged.
