Summary Introduction

Introduction: The ninth cranial nerve is the glossopharyngeal nerve, which is a mixed nerve. It transmits efferent motor as well as the afferent sensory information. It gives sensory innervation (a range of structures in the head and the neck), taste sensation to the tongue (posterior 1/3), and innervate the stylopharyngeus muscle, which acts to widen and shorten the pharynx and also raise the larynx while swallowing.
