Answer to Problem 17RQ

The difference between corrosion and combustion is that corrosion is an oxidation reaction involving metals while the combustion is a redox reaction involving non-metals.

Explanation of Solution

The redox reaction is a reaction where both oxidation and reduction are taking place simultaneously. The electrons are donated in an oxidation reaction while the electrons are accepted in a reduction reaction.

In corrosion, the oxidation reaction takes place. The metals are oxidized in presence of atmospheric oxygen. The metals deteriorate in this reaction and metal oxides are formed.

In combustion, the redox reaction takes place. The non-metals react with atmospheric oxygen. They form carbon dioxide and water.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the difference between corrosion and combustion is that corrosion is an oxidation reaction involving metals while the combustion is a redox reaction involving non-metals.
