The prokaryotic cells are abundant in the open ocean reduced with the depth. The average number of cells in the surface of water is about 106/ml. However, below 1000 m the total number of cells falls between 103 and 105/ml. By using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology, the distribution of Archaea and Bacteria with the depth has been handled in the pelagic waters.
