Interpretation:
The two families of the organic compounds from which esters can be synthesized should be determined. The example of the reaction in which formation of ester takes place should be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Esters are formed by the reaction of alcohols and carboxylic acids and give away water molecules. Always to form the water molecule,
In general esterification reaction can be illustrated as follows:
Usually carboxylic acids and esters referred to their common names. The name is denoted by the compounds, used to produce that ester. Name is formed by alkyl name of the alcohol followed by the acid name. But instead of -ic in the carboxylic acid, -ate is replaced in the ester.

- Alcohols are very useful starting materials for the production of many different compounds. The following conversions, starting with 1-butanol, can be carried out in two or more steps. Show the steps (reactants/catalysts) you would follow to carry out the conversions, drawing the formula for the organic product in each step. For each step, a major product must be produced. (See Exercise 62.) (Hint: In the presence of H+, an alcohol is converted into an alkene and water. This is the exact reverse of the reaction of adding water to an alkene to form an alcohol.) a. 1-butanol butane b. 1-butanol 2-butanonearrow_forwardThis molecule can be the product of which two organic compounds?arrow_forwardWhat are the origins of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds?arrow_forward
