Chapter 20, Problem 111CP
You travel to a distant, cold planet where the ammonia flows like water. In fact, the inhabitants of this planet use ammonia (an abundant liquid on their planet) much as earthlings use water. Ammonia is also similar to water in that it is amphoteric and undergoes autoionization. The K value for the autoionization of ammonia is 1.8 × 10−12 at the standard temperature of the planet. What is the pH of ammonia at this temperature?

A scientist is comparing two lakes. She finds that water samples from Lake X have a pH of 3.50 and water samples from Lake Y have a pH
of 5.50.
Therefore, it can be said that Lake X has a hydronium ion concentration that is
times greater than Lake Y.
Looking up one snowy afternoon from a book titled The Moral Case Against Turning Lead Into Gold (Or Vice Versa), your friend Lena (an expert chemist) says this:
"Ammonium salts heated with aqueous hydroxides form ammonia, water, and a salt."
Using Lena's statement, and what you already know about chemistry, predict the products of the following reaction.
Be sure your chemical equation is balanced!
NH4NO3(aq) + NaOH(aq) ->
Milk of magnesia is a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water. Although Mg(OH)2 is relatively insoluble, a small
amount does dissolve in the water, which makes the mixture slightly basic and gives it a pH of 10.08. How many
grams of Mg(OH)2₂ are actually dissolved in 2.2 tablespoons of milk of magnesia?
