Concept explainers
To explain: The changes when a dialysis bag containing pure water is suspended in a beaker of seawater.
Concept introduction: Water is the most abundant, colorless, odorless, and tasteless compound that explains the fundamental importance to living organisms. Contrary to its bland appearance to the senses, water is considered as the mostly unparalleled strength as a solvent, and its selection as a solvent also has important implications for the structures and functions of every biological molecule. Molecules generally diffuse across a permeable membrane from a higher concentration region to a lower concentration region.
To explain: The changes if the dialysis membrane were permeable to water but not solutes.
