Concept introduction:
Conjugate acid and base: If a base receives one proton, then the formed species is a conjugate acid whereas an acid lose one proton, then the formed species is a conjugated base.
If an acid lose one proton, then the formed species is a conjugated base. Weak base forms stronger conjugated acid.
If electronegative atoms are attached to a species, it causes inductive electron withdrawal. It stabilizes its conjugate base thus increases the strength of the acid.
Inductive electron withdrawal: An electron-withdrawing group increases the strength of an acid. As the electronegativity of the electron-withdrawing group increases, or as an electron-withdrawing atom moves closer to the acidic hydrogen, the strength of the acid increases.

- a At 37 °C, if the plasma pH is 7.40 and the plasma concentration of HCO3 is 45.0 mM, what is the plasma concentration of H₂CO3? The pka of carbonic acid is 3.57. Plasma concentration of H₂CO3 = mMarrow_forwardCarbonic acid has a pKa of 6.1 at physiological temperature. Is the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer system that maintains the pH of the blood at 7.4 better at neutralizing excess acid or excess base?arrow_forwardBoth mepivacaine and bupivacaine are local anesthetics used in epidural blocks. Mepivacaine has a pKa of 7.6, whereas bupivacaine has a pKa of 8.1. Based on their pKa values, which of these will have more of the uncharged form available at physiological pH, thereby blocking pain quicker?arrow_forward
- Please see attached imagearrow_forwardBoth aspirin and salicylic acid are weak organic acid. The pKa of aspirin is 4.57, whereas, the pKa of salicylic acid is 2.99. Draw the structure of aspirin and salicylic acid below, and provide a brief explanation for their difference in acidityarrow_forwardThe pkb of methylamine, CH3NH2, is 3.36. If not, what would be the species of a buffer if it would be prepared from H2C2O4? (weak acid and conjugate base)arrow_forwardCitrus fruits are rich in citric acid, a compound that has 3 functional groups "carboxylic acid". Explain the following: a) Why is the first pKa (the COOH group at the center of the molecule) less than the pKa of acetic acid? b) Why is the third pKa greater than the pKa of acetic acid?arrow_forward
- Lactic acid, CH3CH(OH)COOH, is a weak monoprotic acid with a melting point of 53 C. It exists as two enantiomers (Sec. 7-2f) that have slightly different Ka values. The D form has a Ka of 1.5 104 and the L form has a Ka of 1.6 104. The D form is synthesized by some bacteria. The L form is produced in muscle cells during anaerobic metabolism in which glucose molecules are broken down into lactic acid and molecules of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) are formed. When lactic acid builds up too rapidly in muscle tissue, severe pain results. (a) Which form of lactic acid (D or L) is the stronger acid? Explain your answer. (b) Determine the pKa that would be measured for a 50:50 mixture of the two forms of lactic acid in aqueous solution, pKa = log Ka (c) A solution of D-lactic acid is prepared. Use HL as a general formula for lactic acid, and write the equation for the ionization of lactic acid in water. (d) If 0.100-M solutions of these two acids (D and L) were prepared, calculate what the pH of each solution would be. (e) Before any lactic acid dissolves in the water, what reaction determines the pH? (f) Calculate the pH of a solution made by dissolving 4.46 g D-lactic acid in 500. mL of water. (g) Calculate the volume (mL) of 1.15-M NaOH(aq) required to completely neutralize 4.46 g of pure lactic acid. (h) Calculate the pH of the solution when exactly enough NaOH was added to neutralize all of the lactic acid for (i) the D form; (ii) the L form; and (iii) a 50:50 mixture of the two forms.arrow_forwardH H3C. „N.
