Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The change in internal energy of the heater under the given conditions has to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The first law of thermodynamics relates the work done and the heat supplied to the system.  It is represented by the formula given below as,

  ΔU=q+w

The sign conventions play an important role in the determination of change in internal energy.  When the work is done by the system then w is taken as (w) and when it is done on the system then w is taken as (+w).  Also, when heat is transferred by the system to the surrounding q is taken as (q).
