Loss of electrons is called oxidation and gain of electrons is called reduction. A reaction in which oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously then the reaction is called as redox reaction.

Take the following redox reaction,

  4Fe+3O22Fe2O3

In this redox reaction, iron reacts with air results iron oxide (rust).

Therefore, redox reactions cause rust on economic objects.

Rusting destroys a variety of artifacts made of Metal. By providing protective coverings we can protect them. Food oxidation is also very common, leading to poor food odour. The use of many preservatives such as BHT to prevent oxidation will protect food and other products.
