Concept explainers
To analyze:
The relationship between the system of classification and diversity of species.
Introduction:
Scientists use the system of classification to organize all living things. Understanding classification helps us to study organisms and their evolutionary relationships. Classification allows living things to be organized according to their common characteristics and how closely they are related to each other.
Answer to Problem 9A
Biologists use a system of classification to organize information about the diversity of living things. Classification provides a framework in which to study the relationships among living and extinct species.
Explanation of Solution
There is a great diversity of species living on planet Earth. It becomes easy for biologists to communicate and retain information about organisms when they are organized into groups. The biological system of classification is based on the diversity of species. Classification is all about organizing diverse species into different groupsso that their study becomes easy and their identification becomes convenient.
Since there is a diversity of species there is a need to have a system of classification to categorize the species.
